Got Acne? What a Dermatologist Won’t Tell You. Skip the Dairy

If you want to help clear bumps, pimples, blackheads, cysts etc., we recommend no dairy in your diet. 

Why? We are not sure why but we think it may have to do with inflammation. It’s probably the same reasons it’s been linked to all kinds of health problems. Think about it, was milk from cows, meant to feed baby calves, made for human consumption? It's natures concoction to provide vital nutrients and fats to a young animal that will grow into a gigantic heifer. For humans, it seems to me, that dairy is just not meant for us. I tend to think it’s inflammatory. We do know that dairy can contribute to weight gain, digestive problems, water retention, high blood pressure, bloating, puffy eyes and is also linked to many other health problems if you begin to research it. Yuck right? Well for skin, it exacerbates acne.  Doesn’t matter if it comes from a goat or cow. Doesn’t matter if it’s lactose-free, no-fat, organic etc. If it comes from an animal, it’s a no go for clear skin.

I get asked this question all the time when I say skip dairy for amazing skin and clearing your acne, “But what about getting enough calcium and vitamin D?” I say ask a Dietitian, they will recommend foods like lots of dark green vegetables or to take supplements with calcium citrate, magnesium and vitamin D. 

I love and adore cheese just like you. It’s been a hard habit for me to break. Luckily, there are amazing cheese alternatives now. Check out a meltable cheese called Heidi Ho or Kite Hill cheeses or my personal favorite Miyoko’s Kitchen, the Classic Double Cream Chive or Double Cream Sun-dried Tomato Garlic are very yummy. I heard Miyoko’s Kitchen now has a meltable cheese for pizza. Hooray! 

For milk alternative my favorites are Trader Joe’s brand almond milk or 365 brand from Whole Foods. The reason I choose these two brands are because you want to skip products containing iodine. Careful, many dairy milk alternatives contain an ingredient called carrageenan or algin. Carrageenan is extracted from red edible seaweeds. Algin is derived from marine brown algae. They are widely used in the food industry, for their gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties but are also high in iodine making it a big no-no for acne prone individuals. 

Will skipping dairy keep your acne completely under control? The answer is no. In most cases, it takes doing many things correctly to keep skin clear. This is why you will need an acne specialist.
